Flood Damage Tips
Do...
  • Remove yourself, other people and pets from affected area
  • If water leak is caused by plumbing line, shut off water at the main
  • Call Jim Black Construction to begin Restoration process
  • Call your insurance company to file a claim
  • Stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water
  • Photograph as much of the damage as possible
  • Remove standing water from flat surfaces by mopping and sponging
  • Remove all items from wet furniture tops
  • Place aluminum foil squares or wood blocks under furniture legs to avoid furniture staining
  • Take up saturated rugs and carpets when hardwood floors are at risk
  • Freeze valuable books and documents to retard mold growth until drying can be performed
Don’t...
  • Enter a room with standing water unless you have turned off electricity at the breaker box
  • Operate televisions, vacuums or other appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors
  • Leave wet fabrics in place; space them apart and dry as soon as possible
  • Use heat to dry closed building interiors; mildew and expanded damage may result

  • Track contaminated material into undamaged areas
  • Attempt to decontaminate surfaces with sprays and other over the counter cleaning products, which may not fully disinfect contaminated surfaces
