Once a year, Contractor Connection has a “Global Day of Service”, where their employees volunteer to help their local communities. For years now, Jim Black Construction has partnered with Contractor Connections to branch their efforts out into our community as well. So, every year, JBC has participated in what we call “Day of Service”. For roughly three years now, JBC has decided to use our time and talents to work with our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
For those who have never heard of Habitat for Humanity, it is a global organization founded in 1976 that strives towards helping everyone have a decent place to call home, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Through employees and volunteers, Habitat builds affordable homes for low-income families. These homes have affordable mortgages that come with no-interest payments, allowing these families to live in ideal conditions.
Though there are thousands of organizations and charities that would be wonderful to volunteer with, we felt that our specific skill sets would be best put to use helping to build homes. So, on October 8th, 10 of our employees, including our President and COO, went to our site location to see how we could be helpful.
Upon arrival we met our Project Manager, Kiersten, who let us know the lay of the land and what exactly we would be doing that day. We diligently got to work adding framing and decking to the home owner’s new front porch, as well as on the exterior trim, soffit, fascia, and window trim. Every time we do something good for our community, or donate to a charity, we feel great. However, having the homeowner there, constantly thanking us and saying how much it meant to him, made this an incredibly rewarding experience.
As previously mentioned, Habitat for Humanity is a global organization, so if you are interested in getting involved please feel free to visit the Habitat for Humanity website and find a branch near you.
